It happens to everyone who’s ever dabbled with self employment. Friends, family members, former co-workers and even casual acquaintances may say that being self employed isn’t the same as having a “real job.” Self employment is too loose and free, with no restrictions or regulations. Those who work at home have no real “boss” and the schedules they maintain are self-imposed. Some people truly seem to look down on it, saying self employment isn’t a real job. Is there a way to get respect with work at home?
The problem is, many people who are lucky enough (and persistent enough) to find work at home success might feel there is some validity to the claim that self employment isn’t a real job. Those who experience this lifestyle find their own jobs, set their own hours and work in their own way. It’s very, very different from sitting in an office or standing in a factory. Does that mean it isn’t worthy of the same working respect as any other job out there?

Even very close friends and family can seem a little judgmental when it comes to work at home as a profession (especially when self employment isn’t their profession). On the surface, self employment may seem fairly easy and carefree to the casual observer. The hours may be odd, the environment very comfortable the boss nonexistent. To people who spend eight- and ten-hour shifts toiling, work at home may not seem worthy of respect. That’s when they cry that self employment isn’t a real job.
That’s when they start to affect the psyche of those who know work at home deserves as much respect as any other job in the world. It’s easy to find instability and insecurity in self employment. Those who work at home don’t have co-workers to bounce ideas off of and rarely receive praise because they spend so much time working alone. When someone steps forward to say self employment isn’t a real job or fails to give respect to those who work at home, it can suddenly make the work that much harder to complete.
Get Respect with Work at Home
There are ways to get respect with work at home, but there will always be people who insist that self employment isn’t a real job. By sharing information with friends and family, self employed professionals can shed a little light on this somewhat obscure type of work. Clearing up the confusion often goes a long way toward demanding respect. Remember, however, that not all people will find understanding even with explanation.
Show friends and family the reality of work at home with cold, hard facts like the self employment tax and personal health care concerns. These are real, every day problems faced by work at home professionals. Those who have earned the right to work at home pay an additional tax, provide their own insurance and strive to find paying jobs. It can a long, cold and very lonely road - and it’s one that should definitely get respect. Many professionals will find that most will offer this respect as they learn more about the reality of self employment.
